What is a passport request?

A letter that reaches your account on the Canadian immigration site after your application is approved, asking you to submit your passport so the visa can be placed in it.

It is the same step across all three pathways: visitor visa, study permit and work permit. With a study or work permit the visa is placed in the passport in the same way, and you also receive the letter of introduction you present on arrival.

The name "passport request" appears on the official visitor-visa page, which describes the letter. For the study permit and the work permit, the official guides state that the visa is issued together with the permit in the same application, with no separate request — so your passport is requested in the same way.

What to do when it arrives

Three points set by the official page:

• Submit the same passport you applied with. A newer passport may delay processing, and does not give you a longer visa.
• Submit it to the visa application centre named in the letter, in the way the letter states; some centres accept passports by mail or courier only.
• Do not submit the passport before the letter arrives. The centre accepts it only after an official request.

What comes back

Your passport with the visa placed in it, together with any original documents you submitted. Travel begins only once the visa is in the passport.
